Grade 12 Prom
There will be a brief meeting for all potential grads at 11 am today in the cafeteria. There will be important information passed out regarding this year’s prom.
SHAD enrichment
Do you want to spend the month of July living and learning at a university campus? The SHAD enrichment program is an opportunity for high school students to experience hands-on learning through lectures, labs, workshops and challenges at a host university. Students in grades 10-12 are invited to an info session on Tuesday, Oct 16 at 10:00 AM in room 111. Come out and learn how you can explore Canada this July and meet student leaders from across the country. Please see Ms Taylor Moore or Mrs Mullane to sign up for the info session.
Football
The football team was involved in a close game yesterday against Central Kings but came up short losing by a score of 21-20. Cullen O'Leary had two touchdowns while Bryand Sanchez had one. Tyler Carr kicked two converts. Your Kingfishers are back in action next Monday at 7 pm against Northeast Kings at the Mainland Commons. If you cannot make it to the game, you can catch the game on Eastlink in our only televised game on the season.
Club Fair
Club Fair is this Thursday! Come down to the lobby at lunch and join any clubs that interest you. Many clubs include GSA, Me to We, and so much more.
Boys Soccer
Boys Soccer plays today at 4:00 pm vs JLI at Harbour East. Please excuse the boys team early at 2:30.
Community Health Resources and Services
SHS has a new list of Community Health Resources and Services on the school website. If any student would like to know more about any of these resources or services or would like help to get connected to any of them, I would be very happy to help. My name is Lynda. I am your Youth Health Centre Coordinator. I am also a Public Health Nurse. I am located in Room 325 and I welcome you to drop in.
World Mental Health Day
Tomorrow is World Mental Health Day. Please were green to show your support and understanding for the important issue. Green ribbons will be passed out to those who wish to wear one as well as posters and resources about mental health awareness.
Issues
Thank you to the administration for replacing the microwave in the cafeteria that was needed due to the timer being set for too long and breaking the old one. We have another challenge though. Toilet paper rolls are being removed in the bathroom and used to plug the toilets. We are asking everyone to please be more responsible in keeping our school running and clean.
Green Team
Calling all Kingfishers! Your green team is going plogging on October 18th (weather permitting). What’s plogging?? Plogging is a mix of jogging, but we will be walking, and picking up litter! Please meet us in the lobby at lunch on October 18th if you want to join us!
Phoenix Youth Outreach
This morning Phoenix Youth Outreach will be here in the YHC in the morning from 10-12. All students aged 16 or older are welcome to drop in and check out this service. They are all about providing you with supports focusing on your immediate needs in a safe, respectful environment where you can be yourself. They can help you get on the path to where you want to be. They come here on the first Tuesday of every month. It is a free service. You can get excused from class. Light refreshments provided.
Community Partners
HRM and a variety of community partners (Laing House, Nova Scotia Works, IWK, NSHA, YMCA, Boys and Girls Club etc) are coming together to open a new space in Sackville.  It will be located in the basement of the library in HRM Recreation space.  This space will be for youth age 13-24. All youth are invited to attend a “Design” meeting on October 11th, 2018 at 6pm in the Sackville Recreation space on Sackville Drive below the Sackville Library.  Pizza will be provided. They are trying to get youth from the community together to help inform them on what will go in this space and what the space should look like. If you would like to attend and have a voice in the design and purpose of this space, sign on the sheet on the counter in the main office .
Academic Awards Afternoon
The Academic Awards afternoon has been postponed until Oct 18.The list of students invited to the Academic Awards is now posted outside of the Main Office. If you have any questions or if your name is spelled incorrectly see Mrs. Doyle in Room 303.
Potential Grads
Potential grads that have not picked up and/or submitted the letter about the prom please check into the main office and pick one up.
Aboriginal Students
Reminder to Aboriginal Students. Those signed up to go on the field trip to Truro on Oct 10, please bring in your parent consent form or pick on up from Theresa Meuse in room 229.
