Semester Two - Updates!

Two
Good Evening Kingfisher Students, Parents and Guardians,

Course Selection for the 2026–2027 School Year (Grades 9-11)

It is once again time for course selection for the 2026–2027 school year. The Course Selection Handbook can be found here: Sackville High School 2026 2027 Course Selection Handbook Final.docx  We encourage students and families to take time to carefully review the handbook together. If you have any questions, please reach out to your school counsellor for guidance and support.

Please note that while courses are listed in the handbook, not all courses may be offered, as availability is dependent on staffing, student interest, and scheduling.

Important Dates and Information:

  • Grade 9–11 Student Presentations:
School counsellors will be providing grade-level presentations on Wednesday, February 11th and Thursday February 12th.
  • Parent/Guardian Information Session:
Thursday, February 12th, from 7:00–8:00 PM in the school cafeteria.
  • PowerSchool Course Selection:
Students will enter their course selections in PowerSchool on February 17th and 18th.

It is very important that students choose their courses thoughtfully and carefully. Once schedules are built based on student selections and staffing, schedules will not be changed.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we work together to help students make informed and meaningful choices for their learning pathways.

Please note that Curriculum Night is focused on curriculum and programming. If you wish to discuss your child’s individual progress, we kindly ask that you reach out to teachers directly to arrange a separate meeting time and date. Teachers will be happy to connect with you.

As an added support, you should have received an email from your child’s teacher, on Wednesday, February 11th with a copy of their curriculum outlines giving you a chance to review them before tomorrow evening.  If you did not receive a curriculum outline from each of your child’s teachers, please email the teacher directly.

We look forward to welcoming our families for this important evening of connection and learning!

Emergency Drills

The safety and security of our students and staff is a top priority for Sackville High School and the Halifax Regional Centre for Education. We have been implementing several measures as part of a comprehensive plan aimed at ensuring our school remains a safe place for our students to learn.

One of the procedures our school will be practicing is a hold and secure drill. During this drill, classroom doors are secured, and the students remain inside the room with teacher instruction continuing. All exterior doors are locked, and no one is permitted to enter or leave the building.

Another safety procedure is a lockdown drill. A lockdown drill follows all the procedures above with one exception. During a lockdown drill, classroom instruction stops, and staff and students position themselves for safety. Windows are closed, lights are turned off and the building is silent. Students are kept inside the school and classrooms when circumstances make it safer than to evacuate.

Just as we prepare our students to properly respond to a fire drill, they also need to be aware of the proper response during a hold and secure and lockdown drill. These drills should be treated with the same level of importance as fire drills. Please be assured that staff at our school will spend time discussing the importance of this procedure with students prior to running a drill. We will also take time after the drill to remind them that it was only a practice and there was no danger. When possible, the Community RCMP Officers may assist us in conducting the lockdown drills just as the Fire Department assists with evacuation drills.

Please take the time to speak with your student about these procedures and reinforce their importance. We practice these drills to ensure our school remains a safe place for teaching and learning. We will be holding a lockdown drill on Tuesday, February 10th at 9:30am.  RCMP will be attending to help carry out the drill.

We will also be practising other safety drills throughout the year.  They will be during the following weeks.

April 6th -10th – Fire Drill

May 11th – 15th – Fire Drill

June 1st – 5th – Fire Drill
